„Sartre Férfikor-ának olvasásakor döbbentem rá először egy „modern” mulató igazi hangulatára. Modern mulató – nyugaton. A mulató szó nem is pontos, mert itt már éppen nem mulat senki. Az elegancia üres és vonzó szépségében néma és mozdulatlan arcok, a semmivel és semmiképp az égbolttal rokon kupola alatt egykedvű tökéllyel, jeges testiességben tündöklő görlcsapat. Szomorúság van itt jelen, s a szívek mintha időtlen meditációba merültek volna. A pokol melankóliája ez, ahogy korunk egyik nagy vallásos szerzője mondotta, a semmi vonzása, a pusztulás reménye.

A kocsmák, a zajos mulatságok körül örökké ott settenkedő gonosz, mintha utolsó kártyáját dobta volna a játékasztalra. Mintha a testiség, a zajos vigasság, az alkohol őrülete után most már a pakli utolsó lapja, a Semmi következne, az antivilág, az antigenezis, az antimennyország támadása. Vallási züllöttségben tűnődő párok és magányosok a ragyogásban, a feneketlen szomorúság vonzásában, a visszájára fordult zene lármás csendjében. Az űr előtt mutál, még utoljára, ez a világtalan világ. Tartalma az, amit lebontott: levegője a kihívás. A valóságot már csak ironikusan, idézőjelben tűri meg, jelzésekben, miket bármikor letörölhet.

Pedig az igazi vigasság lényegében és eredetében isteni. A modern, vulgáregzisztencializmussal átitatott mulatók keresztény ellenképe a kánai menyegző. Vidámság, derű s az élet szeretete üli itt körül az asztalt. De ez a jézusi vidámság – paradox módon – a szenvedéstől se riad vissza, míg akik az élet helyett a semmit választják, a szenvedést is halogatják, megkerülik: íme a pokol melankóliájának könnyebbsége és hívása.

A pokol titka: a semmi titka, az élet örömeinek és szenvedéseinek megtagadása. A mennyek titka viszont a szeretet titka. Az élet örömeinek és szenvedéseinek vállalása. A semmi titkával a teremtés titka, a megsemmisülés titkával a szereteté áll szemben. Legszebb modern ábrázolását e küzdelemnek Dosztojevszkij írta meg a Karamazov testvérek-ben, a rejtélyesen elmagányosodott Iván és a titokzatosan nyitott Aljosa ellentétében. Iván körül a semmi művei és tettei, amelyek mindig többet mutatnak, mint a mögöttük tátongó üresség, míg Aljosa igénytelen s alázatos cselekedetei mögött a hatalmas és kifogyhatatlan többlet hallgat, mintha a teremtés egyedül a szeretetben válna erényessé, bírná és kívánná csak igazán megvalósítani, betetőzni önmagát.

Szeretet híján a valóság a semmibe hanyatlik vissza. De mit jelent akkor a semmi előretörése? A nyugati egzisztencializmus fagyasztó szele az irodalomban, művészetben, a visszájára fordított emberi vigasság, a teremtés lebontásának halálos kísérlete? Nehéz erre választ adni. És még nehezebb a másik kérdésre: hol késnek a szeretet kreatív, a teremtett világot szüntelenül befejező és fölfedező cselekedetei és remekei?

Van ennek a jelenségnek egy romantikusnak is nevezhető magyarázata. Eszerint a világ megismerésének a bűn mintha mélyebb lehetőségét kínálná. Holott örömbe és szenvedésbe egyedül a tiszta szívűek merészelnek alászállni, s épp a bűnös szív az, mely a semmi kerülőivel kitér az ismeret, a szenvedés és az öröm útjából.

Igen, vakmerő szívekre, az élet mélységes szeretetére és megbecsülésére van égető szükségünk, hogy megszülessék számunkra a vigasság új formája, hogy ismét körülülhessük a kánai asztalt! Hiszen kivétel nélkül ez után a derű után vágyakozunk.”
